Closure of OPCW

The OPCW-UN Joint Mission in Syria, established on 16 October 2013, oversaw the timely elimination of the Syrian chemical weapons programme in the safest and most secure manner possible. Its mandate concluded on 30 September 2014, and the OPCW mission in Syria continues to deal with the destruction of chemical weapon production facilities.

OPCW-UN Special Coordinator meets with United States delegation

Nicosia, 11 July 2014- Ms. Sigrid Kaag, the Special Coordinator for the OPCW-UN Joint Mission met today with a delegation of U.S. officials to discuss progress made with regard to the completion of removal and in-country destruction of Syria's chemical weapons material.

The delegation was headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for EU and NATO Policy Fran Townsend.

The U.S. delegation representatives were briefed on the important milestones and interlocking steps established by the Joint Mission to achieve its mandate, as well as remaining areas of mandate implementation.

The US delegation updated the Joint Mission team on the maritime destruction of the chemical materials on board the MV Cape Ray. The MV Cape Ray is tasked with the neutralization of the most toxic chemical material from Syria and to ensure that it is done with due respect to the environment and public health as per the United Nations and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons guidelines.
