On 13 November, the Special Representative of the Secretary General to the African Union and Head of UNOAU, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga met with Ambassador Ricklef Beutin, Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations and Chairperson of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission. The meeting served to exchange views on peacebuilding efforts on the African continent and to discuss preparations for the Eighth Annual Consultative Meeting between the African Union Peace and Security Council and the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, scheduled for 17 November at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa.

Discussions welcomed the continued strengthening of the AU–UN partnership and recognised progress achieved to date. Both sides underscored, however, that further efforts are required to consolidate gains and deepen cooperation between the United Nations Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council. In light of current challenges to multilateralism, participants stressed the imperative for collective strategies to advance peace, including through reinforcing the rule of law and restoring public trust in institutions. Particular emphasis was placed on addressing the needs and aspirations of women and young people, as central to sustainable peace and stability.

The SRSG also provided an update on preparations for the upcoming Eighth Annual Consultative Meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council and the UN Peacebuilding Commission, and reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to continued collaboration between the Peacebuilding Support Office and UNOAU towards shared objectives. Ambassador Beutin expressed appreciation for UNOAU’s support to the work of the Peacebuilding Commission.
