From 21 to 29 November, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in the pre-deployment verification of Egyptian military and police contingents scheduled for deployment to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia.
The military verification was conducted at a Cairo military camp and led by Colonel Vincent Gnamolende, Head of the Plans, Operations and Support Unit of the AU Peace Support Operations Division. The assessment reviewed operational readiness across logistical, medical, administrative and operational components to ensure preparedness prior to deployment. UNOAU’s participation supported the AU led verification process.
In parallel, from 20 to 25 November, the UNOAU Police Advisor supported the African Union Commission as a member of the Police Selection Assistance and Assessment Team during the Assessment for Mission Service of Egyptian Individual Police Officers at the Egyptian Peace Operations Training Centre in Cairo. The team, comprising representatives from the AU Peace Support Operations Division and the AUSSOM Police Component, assessed and certified the suitability of officers for deployment. Eighty eight candidates were successfully assessed, including fifteen women.
From 26 to 30 November, the UNOAU Police Advisor also participated in the Operational Capability Assessment of the Egyptian Formed Police Unit One as part of the AU Formed Police Assessment Team. Conducted at the Joint Training Centre in Cairo, the assessment evaluated the unit’s operational capacity through a six stage process. The unit, comprising a main group and a reserve group, was formally certified and declared ready for deployment to AUSSOM.
