Central Asian Experts discuss regional cooperation on water, energy, environment and climate in Almaty

UNRCCA convened a regional meeting of experts of the Central Asian States in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan, on 26–27 November 2025, bringing together officials from national ministries and agencies, the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, and international experts. The UNRCCA water event provided a platform for Central Asian States to discuss common challenges and explore coordinated national approaches in water, energy, environmental, and climate sectors, laying the foundation for future joint initiatives.

During the two-day discussions, participants shared national experiences, explored practical avenues for cooperation, and engaged in interactive dialogue also discussing the elements of the UNRCCA draft Strategy on Supporting Cooperation among the Central Asian States in Water-Energy, Environmental and Climate for 2026–2030. The meeting in Almaty preceded two online consultations on the draft Strategy in October and November 2025.

Based on the UNRCCA's presentation titled “Preventive Diplomacy in Water Resources: Overview and Brief Analysis of Existing Approaches,” the experts reviewed preliminary findings presented by the UNRCCA experts on the general state-of-play regarding regional cooperation on water, energy, and climate, as well as explored opportunities for a more active involvement of the Regional Centre is specific areas of interest. In addition, there were fruitful exchanges of ideas and proposals on the possible Regional Centre's Action Plan for the consecutive years, aimed at fostering practical collaboration in use of water, energy cooperation, and environmental protection.

The participants reaffirmed the UNRCCA’s role as a viable and unique expert platform for regional engagement and water diplomacy, stressing the value of continued collaboration to address shared transboundary water, energy, and environmental challenges across the region.
