Amid a climate of growing uncertainty in Lebanon and the region, UN Special Coordinator Joanna Wronecka discussed with Lebanese officials and religious figures the importance of safeguarding the country’s stability and the wellbeing of its citizens. In a meeting with caretaker Minister of Information Ziad Makary, the Special Coordinator highlighted the importance of sharing verified information and maintaining a space for freedoms that promote public knowledge and political responsibility. The Special Coordinator also underlined in separate meetings with the Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros El-Rahi and the Sunni Mufti Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian the need to shield Lebanon from further instability. They also discussed the collective responsibility of delivering on what it takes to ensure the well-functioning of Lebanon's state institutions. With the Papal Nuncio, the Special Coordinator emphasized the need for joint efforts to expedite the election of a president with a view to supporting Lebanon's recovery.
