As part of his ongoing commitment to support countries in the sub-region in consolidating peace and security, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, yesterday concluded a four-day working visit to Niamey, the capital of Niger.
During his mission, Mr. Simão engaged in extensive discussions with national authorities, including the Prime Minister, in the presence of the Minister of the Interior, Public Security and Territorial Administration, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad, as well as the Minister of Youth and Sports. He also held talks with the President of the Consultative Council for Refoundation and took part in a humanitarian breakfast bringing together the government and humanitarian actors. In addition, he met with members of the United Nations country team and the diplomatic corps accredited to Niger.
Discussions focused on the complex challenges related to peace and security in the sub-region, particularly the fight against terrorism. The Special Representative emphasized the need to strengthen dialogue, coordination, and partnerships to effectively address these issues.
Mr. Simão expressed his solidarity with Niger, which has recently been affected by terrorist attacks, and commended the efforts made by the authorities to ensure the security of the population and combat this scourge. « Niger is facing significant challenges, but its resilience and determination are exemplary. UNOWAS and the United Nations country team remain fully committed to working with the authorities and the people of Niger to consolidate peace, security, and development», he stated.
This visit reaffirms UNOWAS’s commitment to supporting countries in the region in their efforts to promote stability and sustainable development, while strengthening cooperation with regional and international partners.
