SRSG’s Visits to Municipalities

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMIK Mr. Zahir Tanin attaches great importance to improving cooperation with local authorities, who are critical institutional guarantors for the protection of non-majority communities’ rights. OCS facilitates SRSG visits to municipalities, during which municipal leaders and the SRSG have the opportunity for fruitful discussions on wide-ranging issues, including trust-building, inter-community dialogue, gender mainstreaming, sustainable return of displaced persons, religious tolerance, economic development and the promotion and protection of minority communities’ rights.

These meetings not only strengthen UNMIK’s contacts with municipalities but also serve as platforms for the Mission leadership to explain UNMIK’s policies to the municipal and community leaders and to receive firsthand information that is critical to the implementation of the recommendations of the Trust-Building Forum (TBF) and the Mission’s strategic planning.
