The Joint Justice and Corrections Section (JJCS) of the United Nations Transition Assistance Mission to Somalia (UNTMIS) plays a central role in advancing the Mission’s Rule of Law Strategy in line with its Security Council mandate. Through political engagement, strategic advice, and technical assistance, JJCS works to strengthen Somalia’s justice and corrections institutions within the broader state-building and peacebuilding framework. The section supports the development of a constitutional and legal framework for rule of law institutions including prisons, enhances institutional capacity and accountability for serious crimes, and secure and humane prisons. To enhance service delivery and improve access to justice it strengthens community dialogue and promotes people-centered reform. By fostering coordination between national stakeholders and the international community, JJCS ensures that rule of law efforts are aligned with Somalia’s political objectives, contributing to a more stable and just society.
