Joint communiqué of the ECOWAS Commission and the United Nations (UN) on violence that occured following the announcement of the second-round provisional results of the presidential election in Niger
ECOWAS and the United Nations take note of the announcement by Niger's National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) of the provisional results of the second round of the 21 February presidential election
Recalling the conclusions of the ECOWAS observer mission, they congratulate the people of Niger for the great mobilization and peaceful participation in the presidential election.
ECOWAS and the United Nations strongly condemn the acts of violence that occurred following the proclamation of the provisional results and call on all stakeholders to exercise restraint.
The two institutions call on the stakeholders to comply with the legal provisions that guarantee the peaceful conduct of the electoral process, particularly those relating to the procedures for settling electoral disputes, and encourage them to work together to bring the electoral process to an end.
ECOWAS and the United Nations renew their readiness to accompany the people of Niger in their efforts to consolidate peace and democracy.
