The Special Representative Simão reaffirms United Nations commitment to effective partnership with Togo
Dakar, 14 September 2023 – Continuing his regional familiarization tour following his appointment as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão today concluded a two-day visit to Togo.
During his visit, the Special Representative was received in audience by H.E. Faure Gnassingbé, President of the Republic of Togo. The discussions covered several topics relating to the national and regional situation, including the need to coordinate efforts to consolidate peace and security, and development in the subregion. Mr. Simão also praised the role played by Togo in the peaceful resolution of political crises in the sub-region.
The Special Representative reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations and UNOWAS to effective partnership to better support Togolese in their efforts to build a prosperous and democratic Togo.
The Special Representative also met with General Gal Dadja Maganawé, National Coordinator of the Emergency Programme for Resilience in the Savannah Region (PURS). He also held meetings with the United Nations country team and the diplomatic corps.
