Message from the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the founding of ECOWAS

On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), I wish, on behalf of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) and indeed the United Nations Agencies working closely with ECOWAS in the sub-region, to congratulate the Organization on this auspicious milestone commemoration to express felicitations.

This happy event, which is being celebrated this year under the theme: "45 years of solidarity in the service of the peoples of West Africa", also underscores our common vision of a West Africa that is peaceful, secure, democratic in which there is sustainable development that leaves no one behind.

As a privileged partner of the United Nations, ECOWAS has never ceased to play a key role in the integration of the sub-region, improving the living conditions of millions of people, working for the peaceful settlement of conflicts, and promoting democracy, gender equality, human rights and the rule of law.

The severity of the challenges we face today, particularly with the persistent threat of COVID-19 and its devastating effects on the lives of millions of people and on the economies of the countries of the sub region, demonstrate the importance of solidarity and joint action.

In this regard, UNOWAS, in particular, and the UN in general renews its solidarity and commitment to working with ECOWAS to achieve our common aspirations and objectives.

Happy anniversary and all our best wishes for even greater achievements in the service of peace and prosperity for the peoples of West Africa.
