Special Representative Simão concludes four-day visit to Niger, reaffirms United Nations’ commitment to supporting stability, peace, and development

Dakar, 21 May 2025 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, has concluded a four-day visit to Niger. This visit is part of UNOWAS ongoing commitment to support Niger in its efforts to consolidate peace, security, and development.

During his visit, the Special Representative was received in audience by the President, General Abdourahmane Tchiani. He also met with the Prime Minister, Mr. Lamine Zeine Ali Mahaman, in the presence of Ms. Sidikou Ramatou Djermokoye Seyni, Minister of Population, Social Action and National Solidarity; Mr. Sidi Mohamed, Minister of Youth and Sports; and Mr. Mamane Sidi, Minister Delegate in charge of the Budget. Mr. Simão also held discussions with Mr. Mahamadou Issoufou, former President of Niger, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and of the United Nations country team.

With his Nigerien counterparts, the Special Representative discussed various issues related to stability, peace, and security in the sub-region. In this regard, he expressed his support for the efforts made by the authorities to strengthen stability and improve the humanitarian situation. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining an active partnership, while reaffirming the United Nations’ continued commitment, in coordination with various partners, to support Niger in consolidating peace, stability, and development.
