Special Representative Simão welcomes the signing of the Presidential Elections Peace Pact, calls on all actors to uphold their commitments for peaceful elections In Ghana
Dakar, 28 November 2024 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, welcomes the signing yesterday in Accra, capital of Ghana, of the Presidential Elections Peace Pact, ahead of the presidential elections, scheduled for 7 December.
The signing of the Presidential Elections Peace Pact by all candidates and political parties under the auspices of the National Peace Council (NPC) is a significant step towards ensuring peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.
The Special Representative commends the work of Ghana’s National Peace Council and the cosigners for this endeavor. He calls on all candidates, political parties, state institutions, and citizens of Ghana to uphold their commitments to peaceful elections in the interest of longer-term peace and development of their country.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General reiterates the United Nations support to the people of Ghana and hopes that the elections of Saturday 7 December will further deepen democratic consolidation in Ghana and the sub-region.
