Dakar, 20 February 2024 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, was received today in audience by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall.

President Macky Sall and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General exchanged views on various issues relating to peace and security in the subregion. They also discussed recent political developments in Senegal.

The Special Representative commended Senegal's continued commitment to the consolidation of peace and democracy in West Africa and the Sahel. He urged all national actors to work together to create an environment conducive to a peaceful and transparent election within the framework of the Senegalese Constitution.

The Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel reiterated the continued support of the United Nations and his personal commitment to accompany the country's efforts to consolidate democracy, promote peace, stability and sustainable development.
