UNOWAS and ECOWAS in seminar to finalize a joint manual on good practices for resolving farmer-herder conflicts in West Africa

As part of their partnership, the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), are organizing on 10 and 11 March in Saly, a seminar to finalize a joint manual on good practices for resolving conflicts between farmers and herders in West Africa.

The two-day seminar is held at the technical level and aims to review the existing draft ECOWAS-UNOWAS Handbook on Good Practices for Resolving Farmer-Herder Conflicts in West Africa; incorporate comments on the draft provided by CILSS experts, as well as additional comments from ECOWAS and UN participants; and produce an updated version for approval by UNOWAS and ECOWAS leadership.

This seminar follows a workshop organized jointly by ECOWAS and UNOWAS in Abuja in February 2020 on good practices for resolving conflicts between farmers and herders in West Africa, and which was recommended by the ministerial meeting of ECOWAS on Transhumance of April 2018.

Representatives of the ECOWAS Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, the ECOWAS Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, CILSS, UNOWAS and the United Nations specialized agencies based in Dakar participate in this seminar which will conclude its work tomorrow.
