  • 28 Aug 2017 - The Special Representative of the Secretary General carried out a solidarity visit to Freetown, Sierra Leone from august 23 to 25, following the mudslide that claimed 494 lives and the disappearance of hundreds of people. During his stay, the SRSG interacted with the UNCT and the diplomatic community, including the Secretary General of the Mano River Union. He was also granted an audience by the President of the Republic. He finally visited the site.
  • 14 Aug 2017 - Dakar, 14 August 2017 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack, which took place on 13 August 2017 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and resulted in at least 18 deaths, with several other people wounded.

    20 Jul 2017 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, concluded today a two-day visit to Abidjan, where he held a series of meetings with the authorities of the country, representatives of the United Nations system, and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Côte d'Ivoire.
  • 14 Jun 2017 - The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) of Switzerland, organized a seminar in Dakar from 12 to 14 June on: "The role of journalists and the media in preventing violence, including violent extremism in West Africa and the Sahel ".
